God Put Obama Here to Punish Us

Wow! That seems to have come out of nowhere! But that is exactly what I heard when I took my daughter to see her dad (my ex) at a park a few days ago.

I suppose the old lady who told us that Obama was our punishment from God was trying to be a good Christian, acknowledging God’s ultimate power and whatnot. But her statement just doesn’t fit in with my common sense approach to believing in God.

First of all, I do not see our president, Barack Obama, as a “punishment”. Sure, he has made a few mistakes along the way. But so has every president before him. They are HUMAN! I believe that he is really trying to make this country a better place. But it’s a hard job! We were a mess when he took office, and we will be a mess when he leaves. At least by having a new president for a few years, we will have tried to clean things up a bit.

Sure, God allowed Obama to exist and to have the advantages it took for him to make it to the elections. But last I checked, it was “We the people” who filled it ballots to select who they wanted as president. I do not think that God is going in behind us and changing our answers. Although, if anybody had the right to do that it would be Him.

Also, I have to say that I, for the most part, like President Obama. He and his wife seem very family-oriented. I love the ideas of making healthcare more obtainable for low-income individuals (although, there would probably be a better way to go about it) and of helping kids have a healthier future by emphasizing the importance of healthy habits while they are young.

This woman’s statement seemed so far out there. I decided to search the internet and see if many other people shared her thoughts on the subject. Sure enough, I found articles stating that we are being punished for allowing abortions in this country:

Living in a free country and being able to make your own decisions is wonderful! But for many, legalized abortion is going too far. What right has the president or any other official to give you the right to take the life of an unborn baby?

For the most part, I am against abortion. But I can understand how, in extreme cases, it can be the only answer that makes sense. – I do not think I would choose to have an abortion. But I can sympathize with those who make that hard decision in extreme situations.

I am not saying that God supports the decision to abort a baby. But check out the facts at Guttmatcher . The number of abortions has declined a lot since its high in the early 1980s. It just doesn’t make sense that he would choose this as the time to punish us by putting Obama in office.
